It all started with a global pandemic...
No, actually that’s not true. It started long before that.
David, Erica and Mikey’s creative paths crossed in 2014 when Erica served as Music Director for the first Viscosity Cabaret, a raunchy local comedy show in which David and Mikey (along with four other very talented friends) acted as writers and performers for Montanans in the Flathead Valley. They sparked a friendship that would eventually lead them to collaborate on a
silly Christmas album (The Naughty List, available on Spotify, wink wink!) and later, Mikey and David would go on to perform in the house concert premiere of Erica’s first full-length musical, Boobs.
Fast-forward a few years to 2020. March, to be exact. The beginning of quarantine. You remember: puzzles, day-drinking, and bread-baking. Over some conversations on the Houseparty app, the three decided to expand their quarantine bubble to include each other in order to write an entire musical in one day, an exercise they playfully (and innocently but perhaps inappropriately) called Blitzkrieg. What came out that day proved to be the seeds of a much larger story that could not be written in one day alone. And so they set out to create a fully realized comedic snapshot of the times we were living, which
would later be titled Your Musical Is Cancelled: The Musical!
They employed the musically gifted actors and musicians they’d befriended over the years through both Whitefish Theatre Company and Alpine Theatre Project (the two companies that would go on to executive produce the show) and together, across several states and via many Zoom calls, formed, filmed, and recorded Your Musical Is Cancelled. With hours of footage collected, they handed off the project for editing to Adam Pitman, lifelong friend of David’s and frequent creative collaborator (and fellow Viscosity Cabaret member.)
The result? An original musical in the Zoom format filmed on cell phones and laptops, with orchestrations by Broadway and local Montana musicians and actors in quarantine.
Unprecedented times call for unprecedented experiences.
We hope you enjoy
